UPCOMING WEBINAR
Lateral Load Path Basics: Tracing a wind load through a wood-framed structure
Wednesday, January 27, 2021, 10 a.m. PST
Presented by Cathy Scarince, P.E., this session will outline the path a wind load takes through a wood-framed structure, as well as the importance of a complete load path and associated construction details. As a result of this session, participants will:
• Understand the complete lateral load path
• Identify common framing errors within this path
• Understand the consequences of an incomplete path
• Discuss and evaluate code requirements for critical details
AIA and ICC accreditation is pending/in process.
UPDATED FTAO TOOLS
Force Transfer Around Openings (FTAO) Shear Wall Design Method
The APA FTAO Calculator and APA Technical Note: Design for Force Transfer Around Openings, Form T555, match up the popular method’s design challenges with straightforward solutions and accurate design calculations.
Structural building system designs that incorporate lateral force resistance can be a challenge, especially as larger and more numerous windows in buildings increase in popularity. The FTAO method of shear wall design provides structures with a comprehensive lateral resistance design that otherwise omits the sheathing around windows or other large openings.
The APA FTAO Calculator provides required hold-down forces, tension strap forces and wall sheathing capacity, and automatically completes a design check in its final step. It also provides shear wall deflection calculations for both 3- and 4-term deflection equation options. APA Technical Note: Design for Force Transfer Around Openings, Form T555, provides examples and step-by-step guidance on incorporating the methodology into structural designs with the use of the FTAO Calculator. Both tools are available on the APA website.
